Biogeochemistry Topic 1

Monitoring and interpretation of biogeochemical and climate changes

Biogeochemistry Topic 1 (BG-1) delivers long-term, large-scale monitoring and experiments and assesses implications for ecosystem function.

BG-1 Objectives: The science of BG-1 is delivered through four inter-related objectives:

  • BG-1.1 Monitoring  concentrations, fluxes, physico-chemical forms of current and emerging pollutants, greenhouse gases and pharmaceuticals
  • BG-1.2 Manage assimilate and integrating datasets to promote their wider use including linkage to Earth observation-derived information products
  • BG-1.3 Quantify and attribute changes in biogeochemical cycles and identify the implications for ecosystem function by integrating monitoring data with large-scale experiments and models
  • BG-1.4 Develop innovative, effective methods for monitoring fluxes, exposure and effects

These activities inform and are informed by their counterparts in the Biodiversity and Water Programmes and the Environmental Information Data Centre.

Collaborative research projects

BG-1 is involved in many collaborative projects. They include: ACCENT, ACES, OP3, INCREASE, NitroEurope IP, RoTAP, UKREATE and the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution. Please click here for more information.
