BBC Wildlife magazine lists past and present CEH scientists as top conservationists 31st July 2007
Five eminent scientists, all of whom have contributed to the development of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology over the last forty years, are featured in BBC Wildlife magazine’s list of Top 50 Conservationists. The list was compiled by a panel of judges comprising conservation campaigners, science advisors and journalists.
The panel awarded third place in the list to Norman Moore. Dr Moore was one of the first scientists to warn of the potential dangers of pesticides; he was also instrumental in establishing the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology site at Monks Wood in Cambridgeshire.
Seventh place was given to influential scientist and author James Lovelock, who is currently the recipient of a CEH Fellowship. Tenth was Dr Martin Warren, who completed his PhD while at Monks Wood and now works as Chief Executive of Butterfly Conservation, the national charity devoted to the preservation of native butterflies and moths and their habitats.
Professor Ian Newton, Chairman of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and Professor Jeremy Thomas, former Director of CEH’s Dorset site, were also included in the BBC Wildlife list. Both Professor Thomas and Professor Newton are current holders of CEH Fellowships.
